A great way to see the state is on foot. Some of Arizona’s best sites can only be reached this way. In Phoenix, Summit Trail on Piestewa Peak is the busiest mountain path in the city, more than 100,000 people visit every year. It’s just over a mile to the top, 2,608 feet high to work out.
A few miles from Piestewa Peak, one of the world’s most recognizable mountains, Camelback Mountain, is in the Echo Canyon Recreation area. Sheer red sandstone cliffs and the “camel’s hump” are strenuous climbs to the top, and not for a beginner. An experienced hiker will find the trail a wonderful challenge.
There are miles and miles of other trails within easy reach. The White Tank Mountains in the West Valley, the Superstition Mountains in the East Valley, the McDowell Mountains to the Northeast, Four Peaks to the northeast, and at South Mountain Park and North Mountain Park, within the city of Phoenix, all have trails.
Technical rock climbing spots in the Phoenix area include Bobby’s Rock and the Praying Monk on Camelback Mountain, Pinnacle Peak in far northern Scottsdale, Bart’s Rock in Peralta Canyon in the Superstition Mountains.
Stores catering to rock climbers: Arizona Hiking Shack and Arizona Rock Climbing as well as REI stores at Priest & Southern, Tempe, and 12634 N. Paradise Village Parkway in Phoenix.
State Trust Land Permit – Several climbing areas in Arizona are located on State Trust Land.
If the land is posted “no trespassing – state trust land” you need to get a permit from the State Land Department.
The price is $15/per year – $20 for a family. Call the Land Department at 602-364-2753 for more information.

Piestewa Peak and Dreamy Draw Trails
Many avid hikers find that hiking the Grand Canyon is far different from most other backpacking experiences. They tend to react to the experience in one of two ways: either they can’t wait to get back, or they swear they’ll never do it again.
Arizona Geocachers : Arizona Geocachers Geocaching is an adventure game (an adult scavenger hunt) for gps users. The idea is to have individuals set up caches all over the world, and share the locations of the caches on the internet. GPS users then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.
Hiking with Children:
Great hikes recommended by parent hikers include:
