McDowell Mountain Park hosted approximately 1,500 racers in an Arizona terrain’s “true desert course” for NORBA National Mountain Bike Series.

The competition gave the participants spectacular views of the Sonoran desert. The racers competed in the stage race, marathon, and Super D. Stage. Riders raced against the clock on an 8.2 mile loop of mostly single-track with short climbs and steep switchbacks. 81-mile marathon over varied terrain, the event challenged riders to a 10-mile ride through fast, sharp corners with single and double-track. 80% of the course was downhill.

Extra benefit from this NORBA event went to NOVA Youth Cycling Foundation, and should get more young people into cycling.

Plenty of Bike Paths!

Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe have extensive bicycle paths. The Indian Bend Greenbelt in Scottsdale offers a 15-mile city loop. In Phoenix, the Highline Bike Path starts at Baseline and 40th Street and winds through South Mountain Park to San Juan Point. By the time you return you’ve covered 20 miles. Other popular bicycling routes include the city canal banks and rural highways to Fountain Hills, Cave Creek and Wickenburg.

The Regional Bicycle Task Force is composed of representatives from the MAG member agencies, Valley Metro and the Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists. The Task Force has developed a Regional Bicycle Plan, the Regional Off-Street System (ROSS) Plan, and the Regional Bikeways Map. The Task Force also encourages the implementation of these plans by recommending bicycle-related projects for funding from federal and other sources.

Chandler has picked a site for the Chandler Bike Park.  It will be located at Espee Park (formerly Vagabond Park), near Knox and Country Club. The park would host BMX-style bikes, and is expected to be finished by summer of 2006 per Mickey Ohland, park planning superintendent.

You can even request a hard copy of the map via the internet.Scottsdale has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community at the Silver Level for 2005-2007.

The Bicycle Friendly Community Campaign is an awards program that recognizes municipalities that actively support bicycling.  A Bicycle-Friendly Community provides safe accommodation for cycling and encourages its residents to bike for transportation and recreation.

Team1Racing
Team One Racing began as a racing team in 1999. Having started as strictly a Cat. 1-2 team, they have now reached out to other racers with aspirations of becoming elite racers. In 2002, T1R started a Developmental Squad that is designed to help mentor the Cat. 4 & 5 racers to Cat. 2 & 3 status.
